Until I looked around on the interweb for a copy of this poem to link to, I wasn’t aware that there’s an acknowledged phenomenon known as “mansplaining”; though, having come across it, I recognised it instantly. I am, perhaps, fortunate that that in my immediate daily life I don’t have that many interactions with men who mansplain things to me; though I don’t really want to have to feel grateful for not being patronised. That should be the norm, surely? Be that as it may, and ignoring what may happen in the wider world, it feels important to acknowledge that I don’t encounter much of it in my small, local universe.
However… our experiences on the walk definitely prompted me to reflect on assumptions that can exist, about men knowing things, and women not. And this poem fits with this. Unless, of course, I’m wrong…
